After 23 years at IBDM, Flavio Maina and his team, specialising in “Signalling in Stem and Tumour Cells,” are leaving the Institute to join the Marseille Cancer Research Center (CRCM). Together with Jean-Paul Borg, Flavio will lead the team “Targeting Signalling Networks and the Tumour Microenvironment in Cancer”.

Despite medical advances, breast cancer still affects one in eight women. Research plays a crucial  role in the early detection and treatment of this disease. Since 2003, the Ruban Rose Association has been working with patients, researchers, physicians, and associations to support the fight against breast cancer.

Flavio’s team was recently honoured by the Ruban Rose Association with the Ruban Rose Avenir Award 2023. On Wednesday, October 18, the laureates were celebrated during a ceremony at the National Assembly in the presence of its President, Yaël Braun-Pivet. Flavio Main was recognised for his work as a CNRS research director, dedicated to studying the communication between cancer cells and immune cells in response to various anticancer treatments. This project is co-headed with Fabienne Lamballe, a senior researcher working with Flavio, previously at IBDM and now at CRCM. Their research has the potential to improve existing treatments and open up new therapeutic avenues for triple-negative breast cancer, which is known for its complexity and resistance to current treatments.
