High School Students in the Lab

Qiyan Mao organized a day aimed at introducing students to the world of research.

Friday 19 April, IBDM hosted a group of high-school students from Lycée Montgrand involved in the “Réussir avec les Sciences” Cordée de la réussite program run by AMU to introduce them to the world of research.

Qiyan Mao set up a one-hour lunch during which small groups of students discussed with a dozen of volunteers anything about science and life with a job in research. Then, speed-dating science demos allowed students to discover some of our favorite models and big research questions.

Over the course of the afternoon, the students were thus able to model human muscle development in a Petri dish with Qiyan Mao, image nematode development using light sheet microscopy with Claire Chardes, study pain perception with Ana Reynders, observe observe the locomotion of the basic animal Trichoplax with Marvin Leria, and study host-pathogen interactions using Drosophila with Leopold Kurz.

The event was a big success. “A big thank you for this fabulous afternoon of immersion at IBDM! The students were delighted (…) Thank you for the hospitality, the meticulous organization (…)” says Yannick Laurent, accompanying teacher from Lycée Montgrand.
