Preserving & repairing the body throughout life

Throughout its life, an animal faces challenges that can damage its tissues and alter the function of its organs, from external causes such as physical injuries or infectious diseases, to internal disorders of the body such as cancer, as well as age related muscle and neuronal decline. Therefore, animal survival relies on a variety of biological mechanisms that have evolved to maintain and repair tissues and organs throughout life. At the IBDM we are working to identify, understand, and enhance these mechanisms, with research ranging from detection and response to microbes, perception of injury and pain response, brain and muscle regeneration, to the body’s responses to cancer and aging. This research generates new knowledge that helps develop new weapons in the battle against diseases.
